What to Expect from Breast Lift & Breast Reduction

Breast lift and breast reduction procedures reshape the breasts to improve their position, proportions, and overall comfort.

A breast lift (mastopexy) removes excess skin and tightens the breast tissue to restore a perkier, more lifted shape. Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) removes extra tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and alleviate discomfort caused by overly large breasts.

Each procedure is tailored to individual goals, whether focusing on lifting, reducing volume, or achieving a more proportionate balance. Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

The Breast Lift & Breast Reduction Procedure

Anaesthesia Administration: Breast lift and breast reduction are performed under general anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure. The type of anaesthesia is determined based on the surgical plan and individual needs.

Incision & Tissue Reshaping: The incision technique depends on the degree of reshaping required. The most common techniques include:

  • Periareolar (Donut) Incision: A circular incision around the areola, suitable for mild lifting and minimal tissue removal.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) Incision: Extends from the areola down to the breast crease, commonly used for moderate reshaping and repositioning.
  • Inverted-T (Anchor) Incision: Includes an additional horizontal incision along the breast fold, ideal for significant lifting or breast tissue reduction.

For breast reduction, excess breast tissue and fat are removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped to achieve a more proportionate contour. If required, liposuction may be used to refine the shape further.

Nipple Repositioning (If Required): If necessary, the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to maintain a natural breast appearance. The nipple remains attached to the underlying tissue to preserve sensation and function. In some cases, if a significant reduction is needed, the nipple may be completely repositioned.

Closing the Incisions: Once the necessary adjustments are made, the incisions are carefully closed with sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape to support healing. Sutures may be dissolvable or require removal at a follow-up visit.

Recovery After Breast Lift & Breast Reduction

Healing progresses in stages, and following post-surgical care guidelines is key to achieving the best results. While recovery time varies, here’s a general timeline of what to expect.

  • Immediate Recovery (First Few Days): Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common in the initial days after surgery. Patients will be advised to wear a supportive surgical bra to provide stability and aid healing. Resting with the upper body elevated helps minimise swelling and discomfort. Some temporary numbness or tightness may also be experienced as the body adjusts.
  • Short-Term Recovery (First 1-2 Weeks): Most patients can resume light activities within a few days, but strenuous movement and lifting should be avoided to prevent strain on healing tissues. If sutures are used, they are typically removed within the first week. Regular follow-up visits help monitor healing progress and address any concerns. Patients may still experience some swelling and tenderness, but discomfort gradually improves.
  • Full Recovery (4-6 Weeks & Beyond): By 4-6 weeks, swelling continues to subside, and final results become more noticeable. Most patients can return to normal activities, including exercise, depending on individual healing progress. Long-term care includes wearing supportive bras, maintaining a stable weight, and following a healthy lifestyle to help preserve results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast lift and reduction results are long-lasting. However, natural ageing, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can impact breast shape over time. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve results.

All surgical procedures leave some scarring, but incisions are strategically placed to be as discreet as possible. Scars typically fade over time and can be minimised with proper aftercare.

Some women may still be able to breastfeed, but there is a risk that milk production could be affected, especially in procedures involving significant tissue removal. Patients planning to breastfeed in the future should discuss this during consultation.

A surgical bra is usually worn for about 4-6 weeks to support healing. After this period, patients can transition to non-underwire bras. Underwire bras should be avoided until the incisions are fully healed.

Mild discomfort is expected in the first few days, but pain is manageable with prescribed medication. Most patients report that relief from back, neck, and shoulder discomfort outweighs any temporary post-surgical discomfort.
